Pipeline Purpose and Reliability

Petroleum pipelines were first introduced in the United States in 1865. As a result of the industrial development and population growth in this country, the demand for petroleum and gas has increased substantially, as have the number of pipelines. Along with this growth came dramatic improvements in the technology used to manufacture, install, monitor, and maintain pipelines.

Today, our national economy depends on the vast amount of gas and petroleum transported through these pipelines. Without question, pipelines are the safest, most economical mode of petroleum and gas transportation. Satisfying consumer needs is accomplished with over 2.6 million miles of pipelines that criss-cross the country and transport over two-thirds of the energy we use annually.

Pipelines transport crude oil and gas to refineries for processing into the products we use every day. From there, pipelines transport these products through an enormous pipeline infrastructure providing fuel for our cars, trucks, planes, and ships. Gas is also used for heating homes and businesses and cooking food.

Pipelines were typically installed in rural areas located within rights of way or easements. Because of industrial, commercial, and residential growth, pipeline rights of way are continually subjected to construction activity. This activity can greatly restrict access to the pipelines for inspection and/or maintenance and is the leading cause of damage to pipelines.
